Gynecomastia (breast reduction for men)

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of the male breasts and happens quite often. It is mostly related to weight gain.

For younger men, the cause can be an abnormal development of mammary glands that causes the enlargement of the breasts, called glandular gynecomastia, and cannot be treated by liposuction.

The reasons for these enlargements are not evident, but the use of certain medications or anabolic substances, such as cannabis or alcohol, can be responsible for gynecomastia.

An individual may suffer distress due to the enlargement of his breasts. It is often embarrassing for a man to experience these problems and can lead to self-esteem issues.

Sometimes, medical tests are required to establish the cause of the enlargement, including mammography and blood tests.

Procedure

Liposuction is the prescribed treatment if the gynecomastia is caused by weight gain (see thighs liposuction, belly liposuction).

Gynecomastia caused by an enlargement of the mammary glands is treated surgically. (Incision at the lower point of the nipple.)

Notes/Remarks

Health insurance will cover the cost of treatment if it is deemed medically necessary. The case will be submitted to the health insurance provider before a procedure is permitted.

Duration of the surgery

Normally this procedure takes about one to two hours.

Hospitalisation required?

There is no hospitalisation required for a gynecomastia surgery. In most cases, the patient can go home just a few hours after surgery.

Risks

Every surgery carries a risk and the possibility of complications. There may be infections, haemorrhaging or problems related to anaesthesia.
